Driving tip
Lakeside parking is paid and fills by mid morning in summer. Use the larger lots set back from the north shore and walk in rather than circling.

The Vršič Pass loop
50 hairpin turns through the Julian Alps. Stunning, but an SUV with good brakes makes it far more relaxed.

Driving tip
Descend in a low gear instead of riding the brakes, and treat the cobbled hairpins as genuinely slippery in rain. Check the pass is open before you set out.

Lake Bled
An island church on a glacial lake below a cliff-top castle. The shortest worthwhile drive out of Ljubljana and the natural base for Vintgar Gorge and Radovljica.

The lake road is one-way anti-clockwise in parts, park once instead of circling.
Bohinj · Triglav National Park
Lake Bohinj
Bigger, quieter and wilder than Bled, inside the national park. Swimming, the Vogel cable car and the Savica waterfall trail all start here.

Northwest Slovenia
Triglav National Park
Slovenia’s only national park and the frame around most of this list: gorges, alpine valleys and the country’s highest peak.

Mountain roads close on snow, not on dates.
Kranjska Gora to Trenta
Vršič Pass
Fifty numbered hairpins over Slovenia’s highest road pass, the single best hour of driving in the country.

Bovec · Kobarid · Tolmin
Soča Valley
A turquoise river running through rafting towns and First World War history. The obvious continuation once you are over Vršič.

Upper Sava Valley
Kranjska Gora
Ski town in winter, cycling and lake-walking base in summer, with Lake Jasna and Zelenci both minutes away by car.

Velika Planina
A high pasture of herdsmen’s huts reached by cable car. The closest genuinely alpine half-day from the capital.

Logar Valley
A glacial valley you drive the length of, ending at the Rinka waterfall. Quiet even in August.

A UNESCO-listed river canyon underground, with one of the largest known cave chambers in Europe.

Vipava Valley
Small wineries, indigenous grape varieties and hill villages, close enough to the motorway to be an easy detour.

Slovenia’s oldest town: a castle over red rooftops, Roman foundations, and far fewer visitors than the lakes.

Škofja Loka
A preserved medieval town half an hour out of the capital, the right first stop on the way north to Bled.

Driving tips
Before you set off
- Every Slovenian motorway requires a digital e-vignette, camera-enforced with no toll booths
- Winter tyres are a legal requirement from mid-November through March, regardless of forecast
- Headlights stay on at all times, day and night, year-round
- Mountain passes such as Vršič close with the first serious snow and reopen only once it clears
